After ten years, the Uniqlo U line says goodbye to its historic creative directors Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran with the 2026 Fall-Winter collection. So, let’s recall the epic deeds of the Paris laboratory, born with the aim of revolutionizing the concept of essential clothing, by merging high fashion and accessibility. Between the legacy of the Parisian duo and the uncertainties regarding the brand’s future, Uniqlo U has given the urban wardrobe a true blast.

For an entire decade it has represented the ideal blend of the affordability of fast fashion superior and the sophisticated elegance of high-end fashion. Born directly from the vision of Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Trah, the Uniqlo U sub-line is unfortunately going to experience an historic turning point. The showcase of the 2026 Fall-Winter collection, not coincidentally titled “Confidence in Form”, will represent the perfect moment of farewell for the duo of creative directors, while also leading the brand towards the conclusion of his first historic chapter.
Early days
The adventure began at the research and development center in Paris, where the two stylists shaped an independent and recognizable aesthetic language. Their aim wasn’t to chase the rhythms of fast fashion, but to blend various concepts together. For instance, essential items designed to stand the test of time, enriched by a study focused on volumes, geometries and colors which were never predictable. So, the duo’s farewell coincides with a proposal that encapsulates their philosophy. Well-defined jackets, flowing satin dresses, padded coats with a structured silhouette and touches of brighter colors for the men’s wardrobe. An experienced minimalism (and, to some extent, more Western) that gives value to the practicality of everyday life.
The context
In order to fully comprehend Uniqlo U’s success we need to analyse the entire evolution of the Japanese colossus. Founded as a men’s clothing store in Hiroshima in the 1950s and renamed as Uniqlo in the 1980s, the brand based its global success on the concept of lifewear, linked to functional and affordable pieces of clothing. Over the years the company improved its formula by collaborating with significant names, from Jil Sander to its partnership with Lemaire. Instead, Uniqlo U has been able to identify the worldwide desire for a much more subtle elegance. And even if it seems to be the end, the stylistic heritage, tailored craftsmanship and attention to details developed over the past decade will not be lost.
The future
However, the question remains as to which direction the line will take starting from next year. Will the company choose a new and external high-profile creative director, or will it prefer to entrust the evolution of collections to the atelier team raised in Paris over the years? Either way, the experience curated by the duo has left an unforgettable mark. Essentially, the tangible demonstration that a well-designed and high quality clothing line can and needs to be accessible by everyone. Without losing a bit of its appeal.
