And if it becomes law, it promises to revolutionise the commercial approach of brands and labels, from fast fashion to luxury, in the Big Apple. Let&#8217;s see why<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Statue of Liberty<\/strong> may soon also be called the <strong>Statue of Sustainability<\/strong>. Indeed, in New York, legislators have written the <strong>Fashion Sustainability<\/strong> and <strong>Social Accountability Act<\/strong>, otherwise known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mffashion.com\/news\/livestage\/new-york-va-verso-un-fashion-sustainable-act-per-la-moda-202201101641551323\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Fashion Act<\/strong><\/a> for short. If passed, a bill will put luxury brands and labels in front of a new reality.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The case of New York<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Fashion Act will require brands with <strong>more than<\/strong> <strong>$100 million in annual sales<\/strong> (both luxury and fast fashion) to generate commercial revenue in New York, to map (in the sense of <strong>listing and tracing<\/strong>) at least <strong>50%<\/strong> of their <strong>supply chain<\/strong>. In other words: from the origin of the materials to the product on display. The brand will then be forced to <strong>reveal the<\/strong> <strong>names of its leading suppliers<\/strong>. Then: how many and which materials these suppliers produce annually together with the volume of <strong>recycled raw materials<\/strong> used. And it doesn&#8217;t end there.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>If sustainability becomes law<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>They will be required to <strong>publish an annual<\/strong> &#8216;social and environmental sustainability report&#8217;, disclose their climate and social impact, and <strong>set<\/strong> annual targets to reduce it. So, it&#8217;s not a matter of signaling good green intentions, but of <strong>doing and acting<\/strong>. Companies will have <strong>12 months<\/strong> to comply with the mapping and <strong>18 months<\/strong> for everything else. Those who don&#8217;t adhere to the law <strong>can<\/strong> <strong>be fined up<\/strong> to 2% of their annual revenues, more than $450 million.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The goal of the Fashion Act<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For lawmakers and supporters of the law, the goal is to make the market a &#8220;<strong>level<\/strong> <strong>playing field, with equal rules for all<\/strong>&#8220;. Starting from fast fashion brands\/symbols (example: Shein) to higher segment brands.
