The result is a project to elevate its positioning that follows a certain kind of luxury trend, but it has made some people turn up their noses<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">by Massimiliano Viti<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">\u00c9ditions Gallimard <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">has a catalogue of almost 50,000 titles, 9,000 authors and 240 collections of literature and non-fiction. Founded in Paris on 31 May 1911, it holds a record: it <b>is the publishing house with the most Nobel Prize winners, <\/b>more than 40. Since last September, Gallimard has had one more (temporary) outlet in the French capital. It is the one at <b>117 Rue du Bac<\/b>, in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s, which is also the address of the <b>Zara Home <\/b>store. This is not a mistake and, by the way, is the starting point of this article. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">Zara Home + \u00c9ditions Gallimard<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miralta-edito.com\/post\/gallimard-s-allie-a-la-fast-fashion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">The Zara Home store in Paris<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\"> has been temporarily transformed into a bookshop offering a selection of works, including novels of French and foreign literature and titles from Gallimard&#8217;s fine <b>Blanche series<\/b>, alongside <b>stationery products <\/b>marked Zara Home. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">This initiative (which <b>not everyone liked<\/b>, as we shall see) is perfectly in line with <b>the new strategy <\/b>promoted by the president of the Inditex group, <b>Marta Ortega<\/b>,<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">who is focused on <b>raising the positioning <\/b>and <b>image <\/b>of the Spanish giant&#8217;s various brands. But it also represents another stage in the evolutionary path undertaken by the brand for years. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">The evolution of Zara Home<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">Founded <b>in 2003<\/b>, Zara Home (based in Arteixo, La Coru\u00f1a) has become known for household linen and decorative items at <b>very affordable prices<\/b>. The offer has grown year after year, embracing more horizons and trying to respond to the increased needs of people who, during and after the pandemic, spend more time at home. For this horizontal (in terms of offer) and vertical (in terms of positioning) development, in addition to its <b>collaboration with various architects<\/b>, the Inditex house brand has made <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/it.fashionnetwork.com\/news\/Da-gallimard-a-smeg-decifrando-la-strategia-di-partnership-di-zara-home,1663580.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">some strategic alliances.<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\"> For example, with <b>Smeg <\/b>designer appliances. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">Or, with <b>Winsor &amp; Newton <\/b>plastic arts products and <b>Spalding <\/b>sports equipment. Or again: with <b>Banwood <\/b>children&#8217;s toys, home textiles designed in collaboration with <b>Tensira <\/b>and even handmade wicker candleholders from the Galician company <b>Heimat Atl\u00e1ntica<\/b>. In addition, Zara Home complements its shelves <b>with a selection of <\/b>large-format <b>fashion <\/b>or <b>photography books <\/b>dedicated to Kate Moss, Sofia Coppola and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. To top it off, it also sells <b>haute cuisine books <\/b>and a catalogue of magazines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">The sense of luxury for literature<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">The one between Zara Home and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssmag.com\/en\/fashion\/38000\/zara-home-luxury-cultural-collaborations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">Gallimard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\"> is the next and &#8216;highest&#8217; step. It also recalls similar initiatives that have combined luxury and literature. <b>Miu Miu<\/b>, for instance, set up <b>pop-up <\/b>Summer Reads <b>kiosks <\/b>this summer, where it distributed free volumes personally selected by Miuccia Prada. <b>Louis Vuitton <\/b>transformed several <b>popular bars <\/b>in Shanghai into pop-up bookshops. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\"><b>Valentino <\/b>announced a partnership with the <b>International Booker Prize<\/b>. In doing so, fashion relies on literature\/reading to embrace <b>a sense of intellectuality<\/b>, also responding to consumers&#8217; desire to <b>slow down the pace<\/b>, as Francesca Granata, associate professor of fashion studies at the Parsons School of Design in New York, tells Vogue Business. Yet another motivation comes from the fact that <b>Gen Z reads more books <\/b>than any other generation. In the US and elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><b><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">Zara and Gallimard<\/span><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">By aligning itself with these initiatives, Zara Home seems consistent with the strategy of gradually moving towards <b>the premium segment<\/b>. However, it is precisely the brand&#8217;s (commercial) <b>ulterior motives <\/b>that attract criticism\u00a0from the risk of <b>trivialising the book<\/b>, putting it on the same level as a decorative accessory, to the <b>exploitation of literature <\/b>as a mere marketing tool. The Miralta publishing agency gives the example of the literary corners in Jennyfer fashion shops. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Standard\" style=\"line-height: 150%;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Aptos',sans-serif;\">Books that\u00a0the brand emphasises are visible on BookTok, giving the impression of an agreement with the social network. <b>Malice<\/b>? These days, perhaps it is better to be &#8216;sweeter&#8217;. This brings to mind another Zara initiative. The <b>Zara by Castro <\/b>cafeteria\u00a0was created in collaboration with the historical pastry shop Castro Atelier and dedicated to &#8216;pasteis de nata&#8217;, the Portuguese sweets. It is located inside the large 5,000 square metre Zara store <b>in the centre of Lisbon<\/b>.
